Taylor Nisbet brought fantastic energy and focus to the crucial growth stage of our social enterprise. The business expertise that Taylor Nisbet brought made an enormous difference in turning our plans into business reality. Despite the clear uncompromising business approach, Taylor Nisbet never lost sight of the importance of our social mission.

The Project

Clydesdale Community Initiatives Scotland (CCI Scotland) approached us to develop a feasibility study and business plan for a new social enterprise. CCI Scotland is an award-winning social enterprise that provides landscape solutions across Scotland. The social enterprise operates entirely to the benefit of its charitable arm, Clydesdale Community Initiatives (CCI).

CCI is on a mission is to give everyone the opportunity to contribute to their community by providing health benefits and increased social inclusion for people affected by mental health, learning difficulties and socially disadvantaged young people. Through the income produced by CCI Scotland, CCI delivers on this mission.

CCI Scotland were keen to diversify their income streams to be less reliant on grant funding. They had an idea to produce and install natural street furniture in Scotland, having teamed up with product design and engineering students at Strathclyde University to create a potential product range. What they needed to know was how realistic this idea was and what they needed to do to launch this as a social enterprise successfully. We saw an opportunity to find a solution that was useful, cost-effective and fun.

What we did

We undertook a feasibility study and developed a business plan for CCI’s natural street furniture business idea.

Project objectives

  • Undertake research to confirm the viability of their ideas
  • Present a range of options to take potential products to market
  • Develop a business plan for the most realistic social enterprise option selected

Our approach

To get the feasibility study started, we engaged with a range of industry professionals to get feedback on the proposed products and how suitable they would be in the real world. This covered manufacturing processes, materials involved, likely buyers and regulations required. This process allowed the CCI team to decide which product designs to take forward and develop further.

We also researched potential commercial buyers, competition in the sector and resources required to take the idea forward as a sustainable social enterprise. This led to us presenting several options to the CCI board, allowing them to make an informed choice of which route to proceed with based on risk and resources involved.

From this research, the best option for CCI was developed into a business plan for a new social enterprise – CCI Streetscapes. We demonstrated that the selected products had been market tested and produced financial projections to show the viability of the business.

What difference did we make for CCI Scotland?

The feasibility study and business plan we developed for CCI laid out a realistic framework for success. We gave the social enterprise the expert advice, research and route to market information they need to make their vision of producing and installing natural street furniture a reality.

As a direct result of the business plan, CCI secured further funding! This funding will set them up to put CCI Streetscapes into action. With a plan to generate income and further funding to support the great work they do, the charity is now geared up to move towards financial sustainability in the years to come.
